INTRODUCTION

The Needs group conducted a five week community engagement process undertaken in the Broadway-Fillmore Triangle. Community engagement has proved to be especially valuable in the analysis phase of research since it allows the voice of community members to be incorporated into the final plan. The community engagement, albeit somewhat limited due to the length of this study, is crucial for a successful and equitable planning process.

INTERVIEWS

A list of stakeholders, nonprofits, schools and residents was created based on affiliation to the Broadway-Fillmore Triangle. This included a preliminary list of 17 potential stakeholders, 2 individual current residents, and a community group of residents provided by a potential stakeholder. This consisted of private entities, non-profits, business owners, community organizations and school districts. Interviewees were offered different modes of communication, (zoom, phone call and in-person visits). Most interviewees preferred zoom interviews, and a few preferred a phone call. A larger scale resident engagement was set up via Zoom.

Community stakeholders and residents were asked the same 6 questions as found in the image on the left. Through the interviews conducted it is clear that there is sometimes a lack of social cohesion between Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood stakeholders. There is a difference in opinion on how exactly to help with Broadway-Fillmore’s future. The team extracted crucial insights from these interviews and will incorporate them into the final design this studio develops. Stakeholders and residents agreed that perception of the neighborhood was one of the most significant challenges. Also identified were the quality of housing stock and financial funding for necessary projects.
